Hello and welcome to our blog! We can’t believe that our launch date is finally here. First of all, we want to thank you all for visiting and for reading our blog as we’re starting out. Your support is helping us more than you can imagine. For our inaugural blog post, we thought we’d explain why we decided to start Smoosh Life, a little about what our goals are, and hopefully share a bit more about ourselves, as well!
“All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.”
A year ago, Smoosh was never more than just an idea, a dream — a concept so far out of reach that it seemed impossible it would ever come true.
It all started with Google Hangouts. Although we first met about eight years ago, we never became friends until Shannon moved 380 miles away — perfect timing, right? Diane had been good friends with Shannon’s fiance, Zach, since freshman year of college. It wasn’t until Shannon and Zach started dating that the ladies realized they had so much in common. Diane always knew Shannon as kind, pretty, fashionable, and soft-spoken, and she soon realized how funny and utterly sarcastic Shannon was. Shannon, in turn, knew that Diane was one of the nicest people she had ever met and was delighted when she learned that they had very similar senses of humor. Plus, Diane was also obsessed with all the things Shannon cared about — leggings, Disney, coffee, Gilmore Girls, etc. We started talking about a ton of different things: food and wine, Spotify playlists, party planning, and — of course — Disney.
We texted sporadically at first, and eventually we were chatting online almost every day. Like friends tend to do, we shared our hopes and dreams with each other. Shannon mentioned that her dream was to start her own blog and write articles that she cared about, covering food and lifestyle and party planning. Diane loves to write but had never even thought about starting a blog. But when she heard about Shannon’s idea to start a blog together, she was over-the-moon excited at the mere concept of it.
At first, our blog was made of nothing more than sheer enthusiasm. “Wouldn’t that be amazing? We can be business partners!! Omg, THE DREAM.” (Pretty much a direct quote from our Hangouts)
We brainstormed what topics our blog would cover and came up with the name “Smoosh” — a combination of Shannon and Moosh (Diane’s nickname). Even then, it didn’t seem like it would actually happen.
However, we both felt like it was rare in life to find someone who actually follows through with what they say they’ll do — someone you can truly, truly count on. We felt like we found that in each other, which made Smoosh feel like a tangible dream. A few months later, our desire to do it had only grown, and that’s when we realized, "Holy cow. This might actually happen!" We even scheduled our first “Smoosh” meeting and laid out plans for the website and created an editorial calendar — all while watching Moana and drinking coffee. Smoosh Life was born.
“The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing.”
This quote rings so true in our situation. Yes, Smoosh was a dream, but to actually make it a reality, we had to begin doing. It’s obvious, but we often wait for an opportunity to come to us. Sometimes it does ... but isn’t it so much more satisfying when you earn it?
So that’s what we’re doing with Smoosh. We are chasing our dreams, prospects of failure be damned, and putting all of ourselves into this new venture. Our goal is to present fun and informative content with vivid pictures in a clean, honest, authentic, and unpretentious format. We want our readers to know who we are, to trust us, and to not be afraid to give feedback so we can improve.
As millennials who are in the awkward post-college phase of finding ourselves and securing steady jobs while paying off bills and student debt, it’s important for us to live on a budget. So, we’re extending that to everything we present on the blog, which will cover all the things we are truly passionate about — Disney (have we mentioned yet that we like Disney?), party planning, DIY, music and film, food and drinks, decorating, celebrating seasons, and more. And many of these will be based on our own experiences and things we try ourselves.
We already have a lot of fun posts planned for Smoosh Life. We are so looking forward to seeing our vision come to fruition and seeing how Smoosh will evolve as we pursue this dream.
“It’s kind of fun to do the impossible.”
If you haven’t noticed by now, all of these quotes were said by Walt Disney. “It all started with a mouse,” he used to say. Well, in our case, it all started with Google Hangouts. Walt Disney took a chance and created an empire that brings children magic and joy and makes adults feel like kids again. He literally achieved the impossible, and all it took was taking that initial leap and working hard for something he believed in. We want to do that now. We’re taking that leap, and even if it doesn’t take off on a Disney-sized scale, we’re going to enjoy every minute of it.
We are Shannon and Diane, and we are SO excited to share our ideas and experiences with you.
Welcome to Smoosh :)
