Christmas comes with a set of wonderful traditions. We buy the perfect Christmas tree, dress it up with glittering ornaments, hang stockings over the fireplace, decorate sugar cookies while listening to Christmas music … the list goes on. But one of my favorite traditions is watching Christmas movies every night throughout December. There are so many classics I just have to watch every year. When I was little, I would always look forward to 25 Days of Christmas on ABC Family (or Freeform, their new name after they were bought by Disney). Unfortunately, sometimes I’d have to wait two weeks until my favorite movie came on, and to make it even more difficult, I no longer have cable.
Luckily, we live in the age of Netflix and chill. With streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and others, it’s a lot easier to access the movies you actually want to watch. To make it easier, we compiled all the best ones and made a Christmas movie calendar for the month of December. It has all the best classics — old and new — and has everything from A Wonderful Life to How the Grinch Stole Christmas to National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. Obviously, the schedule is completely interchangeable, so feel free to switch up the movies if you don’t like certain ones.
It’s pretty straightforward, but just one note about December 24: I suggested a movie marathon because A Christmas Carol is one of the most remade holiday movies, and it was too hard to choose just one version! I read the book every Christmas, and it never ever gets old. If you’re not too sick of Ebenezer and Tiny Tim, you can watch a whole marathon while you’re decorating, wrapping presents, or waiting for company to arrive on Christmas Eve. Here are the versions I recommend. It’ll give you a nice range of live-action and animated films.
A Christmas Carol (1938, starring Reginald Owen)
A Christmas Carol (1951, starring Alastair Sim)
Mickey’s Christmas Carol (1983)
The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)
A Christmas Carol (2009, starring Jim Carrey)
Feel free to print this schedule out or screenshot if you feel like following along! In the meantime, I’ll be in front of my TV with my popcorn, (hard) cider, and red fuzzy blanket. :)
