Valentine’s Day (and Galentine’s Day!) is just around the corner, so here at Smoosh, we thought it was time to give you some sweet Valentine’s Day content. And who would we be if it wasn’t DIY or budget-friendly? So here we go, with our 10 Cheap & Simple Valentine’s or Galentine's Gifts That People Will Actually Like.
The internet is full of articles giving you lists of 30 Valentine’s Day DIY projects or “Valentine’s Day on a Budget” gifts to choose from. Honestly, most of the suggested DIYs feel a bit too cheesy for me and aren’t something I could imagine giving or making for my husband or lady friends. I can also get overwhelmed with just how many options and ideas are out there. Therefore, I decided to scour the internet for you and create a curated list of the VERY BEST DIY or budget-friendly Valentine’s Day options. Now, obviously, this may not be the truly definitive list of the best DIY Valentine’s Day gifts out there, but humor me. Also, this is a list of only 10! While researching this post, the shortest Valentine’s listicle I could find was 23, so you’re welcome! I am also not the most artistic or DIY-skilled gal (unlike Diane who is a DIY guru — just look at this DIY wrapping paper or the signs she made at my wedding), so I tried to make this list friendly to everyone — no matter how much artistic skill you have. I truly feel like I could do all of these projects, which is saying something. ;) Hopefully this will help you come up with some ideas for your significant other, best gal pal, or whomever you want to make these for ... and not end up with Love Rocks.
1. Bath Bombs
Since bath bombs are so on trend right now, it would be wrong of me to not include them here (I love them!). I actually didn’t realize how easy they were to make! This You’re The Bomb Valentine Bath Bombs and Printable DIY tutorial walks you through the steps of making some very cute heart-shaped bath bombs that are both festive and something your partner or best friend would probably be thrilled to use. It also comes with a free printable to make the jar extra special, or you could probably make your own!
2. DIY Glitter Nail Polish
I know most my close girl friends all paint their nails themselves, so I thought it was a really fun idea to make your best ladies some custom nail polish. All you need is clear nail polish and glitter! It’s super simple and lazy-girl-friendly, as outlined in this DIY Heart Glitter Nail Polish tutorial. This would be great, too, if you have multiple women in your life that you would want to get gifts for. It would be easy to just buy multiple bottles of clear polish and make several at once. It would be especially cute to tie a bow or add a little gift tag to the bottle, as well!
3. DIY Potted Succulent
If you haven’t read Diane’s post on Desert Décor that Celebrates the Cactus, you definitely should to see how magical and beautiful cacti are right now. Another very of-the-moment DIY gift idea is a custom potted succulent. This DIY Valentine’s Day Succulent Planters tutorial gives you step-by-step instructions on how to make a cute Valentine’s Day–themed planted cacti. I know Target’s Dollar Spot typically has cute $1.00 buckets, and small succulents can usually be found at a very low cost (I once got one for $1.00 at a farmers market!). Another spin on this could be a potted herb plant for anyone who might like to cook!
4. Custom Jewelry Box
I really like the idea of making your friend a custom Valentine’s Day jewelry box. You could add her name, a funny phrase, and paint or design them however you think she’ll like. It’s sweet and can be completely customized to her while also being very functional! Also, I know Michael’s has a ton of plain wood boxes and letters that could easily be used for this project. Check out this Custom Jewelry Box tutorial for instructions!
5. Valentine’s Day: On the Hour
I picked this one because I knew my husband in particular would love it. The idea is to create a series of small gifts to give your loved one throughout the day. To keep it inexpensive, you could put in their favorite candy, a sweet card, socks, a photo of the two of you, etc. If you want to get a little fancier, you could do gift cards to their favorite restaurant or stores, a new book, a favorite liqueur, or a favorite specialty food item (fancy hot sauce or syrup for example). I also like the idea of creating a theme — like a date night where one gift would be a gift card to dinner and another would be movie tickets. There is a lot of potential to make this one very personal to your guy or girl and can meet a variety of price points. Also, it stretches the Valentine’s Day celebration throughout the day, and who doesn’t love to get more than one present? Check out this On the Hour: Valentine Edition for the tutorial.
6. Custom Frame
This is another really simple and easy DIY while also being very personal. All you would need is a photo of the two of you, a matte, and a frame! It would be sweet to write out the lyrics of your favorite song or, if married, the lyrics to your first dance. It could also be a sweet love letter, an excerpt from a book, or a poem. Again, there are so many opportunities to make this personal — even with the matting (there are multiple options for colors, or you can even paint it yourself!). I could only find a photo of this on Pinterest but I think it’s pretty self-explanatory.
7. Candy Terrarium
This one is a little sillier and not so much useful, but it is SO cute ... I couldn't resist. I know it might be more biased including this in the list because it’s something I personally would absolutely love, but I think it’s such a cute idea. It has the potential to be very customizable to whatever candies and little animals or figurines your partner or friend might like. Terrariums are also having a moment of popularity, so it’s also a fun and sweet Valentine’s spin on the trend. Check out A Valentine’s Day Candy Terrarium for the tutorial.
8. Lit Mason Jar with Picture
I thought this looked so pretty, and it really adds something special and brings new life to a black-and-white photo. Also, with mason jars still being quite popular, this provides some fun personalization using an item you probably already have in your house. Take a look at the Lit Mason Jar with a Picture tutorial for instructions (scroll down to #2; there are a few DIY projects on this page).
9. Movie Basket
This is another one that can be very customizable depending on your price point. If you’re looking for a night in (Valentine’s Day is on a weeknight!), having a girls’ night, or married to a movie lover (like me!), this could be a fun and easy way to give your partner or friend everything they need for a movie night in. The Romantic Movie Basket tutorial displays the basket with a DVD, champagne, and candy. You could really customize this with anything — popcorn, fancy bottled sodas or beer, boxes of candy, or even homemade snacks like chocolate-covered pretzels or homemade kettle corn. You could even include movie tickets and sneak all the snacks into the theater! I think I would include a Blu-ray of Arrival, two bottled sodas, buttered popcorn, and some high-quality milk chocolates.
10. Painted Mason Jars
If you want to just get your loved one or friend a nice bouquet of flowers, one way to personalize them a bit is to make a custom Painted Mason Jar vase. However, you could really use any kind of jar (anyone else save salsa and pickle jars for future use?), and, like the picture shows, it looks really interesting with varied sizes and shapes. I also love how fun and personal this could be with varying shades of pinks and glitter. If you are a little more artistically talented, you could even paint on some pretty flowers, add your friend’s name, or, well, whatever your heart imagines.
If you don’t want to go with a physical gift, food and experiences are always appreciated — a nice dinner out, a home-cooked meal, freshly baked treats, a hike at the beach, a girls’ night out, breakfast in bed, or whatever you like! This article, 40 Ridiculously Cheap (and Creative) Valentine’s Day Ideas, has a lot of really good experience gift ideas. There are so many ways to make Valentine’s or Galentine’s Day special with your friends and significant other without spending a ton of money. I hope this provided you with some inspiration and gets you in the mood for Valentine’s Day!
