I wake up pretty early for work, and I am not a morning person. I know many of you out there can relate. I have to do a lot to get myself awake enough to function like a competent adult. One of these things is to pump myself up with music on my drive to the train station. It’s 6:30 a.m., the sun has just made its appearance, but I crank up the volume. I’m still a sleepy baby, but it seems to help get me at least a little more energized and make the drive to work more fun.
To help with your Monday morning, here are some jams that are currently getting me through the toughest part of Mondays. And, just a forewarning, my taste in music is all over the place. I’m very much of the “like what you like” philosophy, but hopefully you can find some gems here to add to your own playlist. I’m including a few YouTube videos for songs I am particularly enjoying right now and then a 12-song Spotify playlist at the bottom of the page.
“All the Stars” by SZA and Kendrick Lamar
“All the Stars” is the lead single to Marvel’s most recent film, Black Panther. It’s a generally mellow song but with a haunting beat. I love the mix of SZA’s beautiful vocals and Lamar’s rapping. This one has been on repeat for me since seeing Black Panther.
“Get it Right” by Diplo ft. MO
This is definitely not the first time Diplo and MO have created music together. “Lean On” was incredibly popular and was one of the most viewed videos on YouTube. They’ve collaborated several times on different songs, but this one is probably my favorite. “Get it Right” is also from the soundtrack of Major Lazer’s (Diplo’s other group) documentary, Give Me Future, which is about their concert in Havana, Cuba. It was the first time an American group performed in Cuba in decades, and it had over 400,000 people attend. Their dance number is super sweet, too!
“Legend Has It” by Run the Jewels
This is another song associated with Black Panther and was featured in one of the trailers for the film. Listening to rap is a little new for me, but something about the aggressive beat and lyrics is really appealing. If you need to get super pumped up in the morning, this is definitely the song.
“Bad At Love” by Halsey / Hook N Sling Remix
I have always loved Halsey’s raspy voice, and and she is a popular choice with DJs, as they like to remix her original songs. I enjoyed “Bad at Love” as is but have really enjoyed Hook N Sling’s Remix lately. It’s always interesting to me how a remix can elevate or even completely change the mood and tone of a song. Hook N Sling, in my opinion, makes “Bad at Love” even better with a moodier, sadder, and richer sound than the original.
“Sky Walker” by Miguel
This is a chill song that is just about living life and not caring about what others think. The artist, Miguel, is a huge Star Wars fan, which inspired the name of the song and the play on the name of the most famous Jedi. This is great to queue up for your walk out of work, tossing aside work stress and starting your free time to do whatever you want.
These were the five songs that have especially stood out to me lately, and I’ve created a Spotify mix of 12 songs — including these five — of other jams I’ve been enjoying. If you need a pre-made playlist for your Monday, I hope you enjoy! More Monday Mixes are in the future, so stay tuned.
What are some songs you’ve been loving lately?
