Rather than a playlist or list of things you should read, I thought I’d share some thoughts on a subject that’s been weighing on me lately. So for those of you who don’t know, I recently had a birthday and turned the big 2 7! I actually feel FANTASTIC. Like, I feel better being 27 than being 26 — I think because the actual number “27” is more aesthetically pleasing and I like the number 7. It’s super arbitrary, I know, but there it is. I’m not married and don’t have youngins yet, so I still kind of feel like a kid — except one with money that can go out and do things without having to ask my parents for a ride. It’s a time in life when I still get carded and don’t have to worry about wrinkles or back pain.
Still, so many young people lament the fact that they’re getting older. “I’m closer to 30 than 20, my life is over.” “I’m more than a quarter-century old. Might as well check into that nursing home.” I sympathize with those complaints, I do, but it legitimately bothers me when people in their twenties waste their time grieving their age instead of being thankful and enjoying the period of life they’re in. Because guess what? YOU’RE ONLY IN YOUR TWENTIES.
I say “literally” a lot, but I’ll say it again because I really mean it this time: This is literally the age that everyone wishes they were. Teenagers wish they were in their twenties so they can have freedom but still be young and beautiful. If people in their thirties or older could pick an ideal age to be again, they’d pick their mid- to late twenties. Why? Because at this age, we have it enough together to be responsible, competent human beings yet (for some of us, at least) still have the ability to make choices and even completely change the course of our lives. We might have rent, but we still have the luxury to #yolo.
I don’t want to prolong my jeremiad, lest you — to put it bluntly — get annoyed or sick of me, but for those of you who are young enough to relate to what I’ve said, time goes by quickly. I graduated college five years ago, but it only feels like two. The years have gone by ridiculously fast. Once you’re in the routine of work and weekends, the seasons pass and suddenly you’ve gone from 22 to 27.
Enjoy the time you have, and revel in the age that you’re in. So many people wish they were in our exact position right now, with the world at their fingertips. Make the most of your freedom. Make memories (while still saving money, of course :D), and take risks because at this age, if we fall we can get back up again.
Anyways. Those are my Monday musings. :) Thanks for reading and bearing with me, and I hope this inspires at least one person out there. I hope you have a wonderful week, and don’t forget to make the most of life while you still can.
Stay young, and live strong,
P.S. Now that I’ve explained how this post isn’t about a Spotify playlist, here’s a Spotify playlist that will hopefully bring back some memories and get you pumped to live life to the fullest. ;)
