This past weekend, Pixar Pier officially opened at Disney California Adventure. For those who might be unfamiliar, Disney recently rethemed Paradise Pier ― which had a general California theme ― and transformed it into Pixar Pier, which is now based on the characters and films of Pixar. This retheming included altering the existing rides, snack stands, and game counters to have Pixar themes
Rather than a playlist or list of things you should read, I thought I’d share some thoughts on a subject that’s been weighing on me lately. So for those of you who don’t know, I recently had a birthday and turned the big 2 7! I actually feel FANTASTIC. Still, so many young people lament the fact that they’re getting older. “I’m closer to 30 than 20, my life is over.” “I’m more than a quarter-century old. Might as well check into that nursing home.” But guess what? YOU’RE ONLY IN YOUR TWENTIES.
Now that we’re halfway through the year, I thought it might be fun to go back and revisit some of Smoosh Life’s most successful Instagram posts. I always find it fascinating seeing what people like and don’t like (especially since my own favorites don’t always align with what’s popular). Basically, y’all like food. So without further ado, here are our top 10 Instagram posts of 2018 thus far.
I love food. Like, a lot. It may not seem like it from all the healthy food and “lose weight” posts I do, but the reason I work out and eat healthy as much as possible is so I can have sporadic splurge meals without feeling guilty ― especially on the weekends or when I’m going out with friends. So, to combat my cravings, I have to keep healthy snacks at my desk. Because they’re literally inches away from me, I end up reaching for those rather than waste time leaving my building and spending money on snacks that in the end aren’t good for me.
If you didn’t know, National Martini Day is on June 19. A classic cocktail that started gaining acclaim in the 1920s, the martini represents sophistication, elegance, and savoir vivre. Although that may be true, I have yet to find more than two or three people who actually like a plain martini... Still, such a classic deserves recognition ─ and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate than with the iconic martini drinker himself: James Bond.
Even though we live in Southern California and only experience two seasons 一 warm and slightly less warm 一 summer here means constant sun and consistent forecasts of cloud-free, 77-degree weather. And, like true red-blooded Americans, we have barbecues! Whether your menu features burgers, hot dogs, and potato salad or consists of carne asada, grilled corn, and tacos for days, you’re going to need a chill summer playlist to accompany your lazy afternoons in the sun.
Today, I’m talking about the part of working out that many people dread and actively avoid: cardio. From muscled bodybuilders to people who just don’t like to exercise, cardio is viewed as its own kind of pain that lasts a lot longer than a few agonizing bicep curls. But whether you like it or not, cardiovascular workouts are an excellent way to lose weight, maintain weight, and just live a healthy lifestyle. And the best part is that you don’t need a gym or fancy equipment to do them, so it’s perfect if you’re living on a budget.
We are often given the advice to just Be you!”or “Be yourself!” and Instagram is loaded with endless posts on #authenticity. It seems like our culture is craving to see realness and uncurated lives, yet so much of what we see/experience is still edited to look or appear a certain way. This applies to a perfectly posed kitchen #shelfie as well as your own personality. I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about this the last couple of years, so I thought today for The Monday Muse I would go a bit deeper into my journey of learning to be happy with my personality and just being “me.”
It’s difficult to construct a reason for why Solo: A Star Wars Story should even exist in the first place. Fleshing out the backstory of a character whose ambiguous existence is what made him popular from the start is a surefire recipe for disappointment…
In 2017, Disney began rolling out its new design for Disney stores with its first test sites in the U.S. at the Northridge Fashion Center and Westfield Century City. Two international locations also received this face-lift in Nagoya, Japan, and Shanghai, China. A couple of weekends ago, Zach and I stopped by the Northridge location to check out one of its first pilot stores!
Sometimes, you just have bad days. Maybe you dealt with a difficult client, spilled coffee on yourself, got yelled at for something that wasn’t your fault, had an extra-long day at work, got cut off by one too many cars … bad things are going to happen. For me personally, two things that will always, always cheer me up are comedies and a well-made cocktail. I love them on their own, but when you put them together?? I’ll be grinning from ear to ear and forget that my bad day ever happened.
Happy Memorial Day! We finally have another three-day weekend and a day off of work, so everyone can rejoice! While these extra days off are well-deserved for all of us, whether you’re spending your Monday relaxing at home, traveling, or having an all-American barbecue, I do encourage you to take a moment to remember why we have this holiday in the first place.
Today I am going to address a topic that no one wants to: salads. It’s the dreaded word that haunts you when you you’re trying to eat healthy. For some of us, when we think “maybe I should eat a salad,” we might as well be thinking “maybe I should get a root canal.” It’s painful. I’ve learned though, that with time, salads don’t have to be so gross or boring. You don’t have to feel like a rabbit because you can make salads taste, dare I say, delicious? Or, at least, moderately enjoyable. I don’t want to make too many lofty promises.
So you’re in your twenties. You’re out of college, working that 9-to-5 grind, and earning your own paycheck. You’re living in a world of freedom where you can eat what you want, watch what you want, date whomever you want, and travel the world ... and then the bills roll in. Saving money is especially hard as a young adult (and even more so in California) because you’re barely venturing out on your own. But I’m here to tell you that it is possible. To show you what I’m talking about, here are seven simple tips on how to save money slowly and improve your credit score at the same time.
Welcome to Part 9 of our Walt Disney World Honeymoon series! Today we are covering everything we did and ate in Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Hollywood Studios is Disney’s Hollywood-themed park that puts a big emphasis on movies, film, production, and animation. It hosts some pretty popular attractions but is the smallest park of the four in WDW. We had a lot of fun exploring Hollywood Studios…
Whether you’re skinny, average, or overweight, most of us are self-conscious about the way we look. Unfortunately, that’s just how it is. For many of us, our weight-loss journeys include a process of self-acceptance as well as pound loss. And that’s great. However, you can also be completely happy with where you are weight-wise while still being completely unhealthy. And that’s not good, either. Living a healthy lifestyle is the only way to enjoy your favorite foods and not gain weight 一 trust me, I know #thestruggleisreal. But where do you start? Below, I listed out small ways you can adjust your eating habits and live a healthier lifestyle.
I know not everyone likes to read. The act itself is slow and requires a lot of concentration 一 not to mention sitting still. There’s a reason why people immediately reach for their TV remote the second they get home (I definitely do). Unfortunately, not everyone has the sort of concentration to read long novels, even if they love the story itself. And if it’s Monday? Forget about it. So, rather than force my favorite lengthy literature on you, I want to present a few books that are short and easy to read without sacrificing a good story.
Welcome back to our Walt Disney World series! It’s been a couple of weeks, so in case you missed it, definitely check out my previous post on Epcot’s Future World. For those who might be unfamiliar, Epcot is broken up into two main areas: Future World and World Showcase. Today, I am covering everything I did and ate while in Epcot’s World Showcase. The World Showcase is probably the best thing about Epcot…
Ever since I did the Daniel Fast, I changed the way I approach meals. Now that it’s over, honestly my diet isn’t going to change all that much because I gotta tell you, it feels great to feel great. I know it’s not easy overhauling your entire diet, so start off slowly by eating healthy breakfasts. To help you out, I decided to put together a list of my favorites below. And don’t worry; these aren’t under the Daniel Fast, so they’re food for humans, not just rabbits or birds. In the end, these breakfasts are delicious and will cost you under $5, saving you money and calories!
Here we are again, Monday. A brand new week to not only get the work done we need to for our jobs, but also to enjoy ourselves, spend time with friends and family, work toward our goals, or make delicious cocktails. Whatever you have planned this week, we know that the biggest barrier to a great week is Monday. So, to hopefully make it suck just a little less, as you sip coffee through half-closed eyes, I created our second volume of Monday Mix (check out Volume 1) which highlights a few longs I’ve been loving lately as well as a curated Spotify album for you to listen to later.
Avengers: Infinity War is a knock-down, drag-out, rollercoaster of a blockbuster for those who have managed to stay invested in this 19-film franchise. It’s difficult to talk about Infinity War because there’s just no good place to begin. When you’re talking about the climax of a franchise that is a decade in the making with almost twice as many films, simply recapping the plot of this film isn’t going to do much for you. I’ll start by saying that it’s a miracle that Infinity War even exists…
This year, God has smiled down upon us. Why? Because May the Fourth and Cinco de Mayo finally fall on a weekend. Try to contain your excitement. This gives us an excuse to get together with our nerd friends and have an epic Star Wars marathon. And now, with nine movies in the Star Wars oeuvre, you can literally spend days viewing these films in whatever order you deem most relevant. But wait: Cinco de Mayo is on Saturday! Well, I have a solution. I propose that rather than choose between Star Wars and Cinco de Mayo, why not combine the two for a legendary space-age fiesta?
When I wake up on Monday mornings, the first thing I want (besides more sleep) is coffee. However, even that can get old; sometimes your mouth just wants variation and other flavors. And then, something miraculous happened. I discovered a coffee that filled that void ― a coffee so delicious that it actually made me excited to wake up in the morning and drive to work. I’m talking Vietnamese-style coffee. So for today’s Monday Muse, I thought I’d share exactly what you need to make your own Vietnamese-style coffee in the comfort of your own home or office.
If you’re sitting at work trying to find some super-fun internet content to help the day go by just a little faster, you’ve come to the right place. Today, we’re sharing a recap of some of our favorite posts in case you might have missed them.
With superhero films becoming so popular in the last 10 years, more female heroes have been given a stage. I am particularly fond of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and have fallen in lady love with all the women heroes this universe has provided us within its 18 films. With Avengers: Infinity War premiering this week, I thought it would be only fitting to spend some time reflecting on some of the female heroes that have been key in so many of Marvel’s films. With male characters like Iron Man and Captain America often taking center stage in advertising and media, I hope this also provides you with a new perspective on some of the lady heroes in each of these movies.
Avengers: Infinity War premieres this Friday (or Thursday night for those attending premiere showings), and as a lover of the Marvel cinematic universe, I am very excited. But, we still have to get through one more week of work before we can settle in with our popcorn and soda, ready to cry our eyes out as we watch our favorite champions face unimaginable evils.
In order to help you get through this week and hopefully make your Monday a little better, I have created a Marvel Movie Marathon that gives you a different film to watch each night this week in preparation for the premiere….
Ever since the Walt Disney Company acquired Pixar Animation Studios in 2006, it has been slowly incorporating Pixar characters into the Disney parks. ... With the newly debuted Pixar Fest, which runs until Labor Day on September 3, Pixar is finally getting the spotlight it deserves, and for the first time in a while, DCA’s theme is becoming more and more consistent and harmonious. This past Saturday, the Smoosh crew visited the Disney parks to check it out, so today we’re reviewing everything we saw and ate so you can get a taste of what to expect.
Hello, and welcome back to another installment of our Walt Disney World Honeymoon. For the last couple of weeks, I shared everything I did at Disney’s Animal Kingdom as well as everything I ate. Today, we move on to Epcot! Epcot was the second park constructed in Walt Disney World (WDW) and is two times the size of the Magic Kingdom. The purpose of Epcot is to celebrate human achievement, technological innovation, and international cultures. Epcot is primarily made up of two main sections: Future World and the World Showcase. Since these are two pretty distinct areas of Epcot, and both have a lot to cover, I am going to split it up into two posts, starting with Future World.
If you’re obsessed with Disney like us, you’ll know that this today — Friday, April 13 — is the start of Pixar Fest* at the Disney parks! We covered the changes in a previous post, which outlined exactly what’s being removed and introduced to both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure (DCA). You can imagine how excited we are to finally see all those plans come to fruition. Since Shannon and I LOVE planning things — whether they’re parties, vacations, or holidays, we’d be remiss if we didn’t celebrate the start of Pixar Fest by throwing our own Pixar viewing party! How exactly do you go about throwing a Pixar party? Why, let me tell you!
